January 22, 2003
Checked Mr. Latimer's abstract for my project and emailed corrections to him. Got started on putting my poster together, cutting paper, etc. Made good progress; poster construction should be finished this week.
January 17, 2003
Searched for libraries for creating and manipulating PNG files. Two possibilities: Paintlib and Libpng. Potential problems: installation of these libraries might be complicated.
January 15, 2003
Poster content document converted to an HTML file. Continued work on programming PGM P5 version of my program.
January 13, 2003
Poster content (first edition) is completed. It can be found here (in .doc format; HTML format coming soon).
January 10, 2003

Status Report for two weeks ended December 4, 2002
Progress has been slowed by a bug in the program that uses P5 PGM files. Hopefully I'll get it figured out soon.
December 4, 2002
Between prayers for snow, I worked on the infuriating P5 bug and watched the new supercomputer's delivery.
December 2, 2002
Worked on P5 bug.

Missed class to participate in the National Russian Essay Contest.
November 16, 2002
Cleaned up home page to allow more space for this quarter's assignments. Links to First Quarter assignments are now found here. Created a new Supercomputer Applications page.
November 15, 2002
Researched image filetypes (JPEG, GIF, PNG, PGM) in preparation for choosing one to use for my next iteration. In other news, my father has given me a contact who works in the computer imaging field. Also updated Iteration 2 report for the final time.
Status report for two weeks ended November 15
The first iteration of my program works. It successfully hides a text message in an ASCII .pgm file, and a separate program retrieves the message from the new file (without using the original image). I'm currently working on making it more user-friendly by allowing the user to specify the filenames for source and destination in the command line.
November 13, 2002
Decoding program now works! The next step is to make the program work with JPEG, GIF, or other common image file types. Iteration 2 report finished.
November 11, 2002
Worked on pseudo-code for the decoding program. Good progress!
November 8, 2002
Worked on commenting and improving code, which is now ready for the second part.
November 6, 2002
Found out first quarter grade and looked at rubric for grading of second quarter. Began preparing web page for second quarter.
November 5, 2002
Moved Quarter 1 Progress Log to a separate page.
November 4, 2002
I've been very productive over the weekend. Reached a milestone: the program now encodes text messages (based upon a rudimentary test, it works). Next part: extract the messages, and compare the visual difference in the images.
November 2, 2002
Finished all but the critical functions of the second iteration. The program now successfully reads, copies and formats the output in a .pgm file.
