Computer Architecture/Distributed Computing: Constructing a cluster. Title: Construction and Application of a Cluster of MCW Computers Objective: To construct and operate a cluster of computers and benchmark the performance of the cluster comparing it to a traditional supercomputer from a cost and performance standpoint. Also, find any applications for which the cluster could be used in the Syslab. Justification: To reasearch the uselfulness of clusters as alternatives to using standalone supercomputers (an example of this would be the G5 Cluster at VTech). Description: To combine the MCW computers located in the systems lab into a cluster which would effectively pool all the computing power of the nodes. This would be in the Parallel Computing aspect of computer science. Limitations: Cost of computer parts could possibly be a limitation if any need to be purchased as well as sucessfully getting the cluster to work.
