A Note on ratings: I'm a very hard grader; even pages that got a C+ rating can contain useful information. Any pages with an A or above are among the best I have ever seen.
- Beyond the Drake Equation - The Drake Equation is "a method of estimating the number of civilizations in our Galaxy that could be detectable from Earth." This page explains that equation. It goes far beyond most comparable pages; it includes forms for the user to estimate Drake factors and several modifications of the original equation.
Rating:B+
- Computer Systems Laboratory - A wealth of information in many areas of Computer Science. The supercomputing section alone contains tutorials on advanced graphics, parallel processing and chaotic systems.
Rating:A
- L-Systems - L-Systems is one method of producing fractals, patterns which exhibit "self-similarity on different scales." Such effects can be produced by repition of a few simple rules. L-Systems is one method to define and impliment those rules. This page gives an average introduction to L-Systems.
Rating:C+
- General Information (The SETI League) - I found this site to be a good general introduction to the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). It's difficulty level ranges from basic astronomy information to a comparison of different search programs. The page layout is above average and highly readable.
Rating:B
- Two-dimensional L-systems - Another look at L-systems, this one provides mostly patterns. Also includes some color patterns for added variety. Suggest reading a full tutorial on L-Systems before trying to understand this one.
Rating:B
- Frequently Asked Questions (SETI Institute) - Similar to the SETI League's page, this one answers various background questions. It also goes into the guiding philosophy of SETI (e.g. why search in microwave, why we believe the search is worthwhile).
Rating:B+
- A Map of the Milky Way - The "map" of the Milky Way (our own galaxy) should be useful for the project. Also included are some stats on the galaxy (size, number of stars, etc).
Rating:B
- OpenGL Tutorials - A series of OpenGL tutorials aimed at developing programming ability.
Rating: B
- SETI@home - An excellent paper explaining the SETI@home project. Includes an explanation of how the client and server side aspects of the project work and relate.
Rating: A-
- Can SETI Succeed - Two short papers by Ernst Mayr and Carl Sagan about the worth of conducting SETI research. One of the best summaries of the arguments I have seen.
Rating: B+
- Learn About SETI@home - A collection of sites about SETI@home.
