Elements of Technical Writing
2005-2006
What is technical writing? (from Elements of Technical Writing by Blake and Bly)
- Technical writing is different from fiction, essays, plays, and poetry. Technical
writing deals with the specialized areas of science and technology.
- Technical writing usually deals with an object, process, system, or abstract idea.
The language stresses accuracy rather than style. The tone is objective; the technical
content, not the writing style or author's feelings toward the subject, is the focal point.
- Technical writing differs from ordinary composition in purpose as well as content.
The primary goal of technical communication is to transmit technical information accurately.
- Technical writing differs popular nonfiction, in which the writing is meant to entertain.
- Technical writers are concerned with communication. If they have to they will
sacrifice style, grace, and technique for clarity, precision, and organization.
